Alex Walker, MSN, PMHNP-BC

Serving Patients Virtually in Maryland, DC, and Virginia

About Alex

Alex is a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner who believes meaningful psychiatric care begins with listening, and healing begins when a person feels truly understood. In visits with her patients, she leads with compassion, curiosity, and respect. While she brings expertise in psychiatric care, she also recognizes that her patients are the experts on their own lives. Together, they develop personalized treatment plans that reflect each patient’s values, goals, and priorities. Her approach is holistic, integrative, and grounded in evidence-based care.

Before pursuing advanced practice psychiatry, Alex spent more than a decade supporting women and families as a registered nurse and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) in hospital, outpatient, and private practice settings. Caring for women during pregnancy, postpartum, breastfeeding, and other pivotal life transitions gave her a deep appreciation for the complex ways hormonal changes, relationships, and life experiences can shape emotional health.

Alex earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Yale University, where she completed extensive psychiatric training across a variety of clinical settings. Her experience includes a nine-month rotation at Johns Hopkins Suburban Hospital, where she trained alongside psychiatrists in consult-liaison psychiatry, inpatient psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, and partial hospitalization. She also completed specialized training in reproductive psychiatry, providing integrative care across the reproductive lifespan, with particular emphasis on pregnancy, postpartum, and early parenthood.

Alex is certified in Perinatal Mental Health (PMH-C) through Postpartum Support International and is currently pursuing certification as a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP).

Naturally curious and committed to lifelong learning, Alex continues to deepen her knowledge and refine her practice. In addition to her formal psychiatric training, she has completed advanced coursework in perinatal psychopharmacology, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.

Alex joined Psychiatry for Women because she was drawn to its physician-led, collaborative approach and its commitment to evidence-based care, mentorship, and advancing women’s mental health. She works closely with Dr. Julie Brownley through an intensive mentorship program focused on reproductive psychiatry, psychopharmacology, and the thoughtful integration of emerging evidence into clinical practice.
